Focus Is The Key

Contrary to the misleading NYT headline the G.O.P. is not reaching to the “Other Party”. I believe a more truthful headline would better read, ‘G.O.P. Attempts to Divide and Distract the Other Party and The Nation’. It is true that the G.O.P. is reaching to “moderate” Democrats in the Alito appointment but should they succeed in swaying these “moderates” it will only serve to drag the Supreme Court and the nation further to the right. The truly infuriating reality is that the G.O.P. with this administration once again serving as point is trying to drive the attention of the nation away from a failed President with a failed domestic and foreign policy agenda and a corrupt Senate and Congressional leadership. They are doing this while simultaneously pandering to the zealots of the Republican Party. Kudos however, should go to Harry Reid for his blunt and well executed legislative assault which resulted in bringing the focus back to the war to some extent. It would seem the only way to get the Republican leadership of the Senate to take any meaningful action is to lock them in a room and not let them out until the job is done. I am encouraged by Mr. Reid’s actions and hopeful that Governor Dean will follow his lead in orchestrating a concerted effort to keep the Democratic Party and the nation focused on the real issues. It is absolutely imperative that the Democratic Party present a competent and united front on all of these issues and show real leadership by not just focusing attention on the real issues but also presenting a clear and comprehensive plan to take the nation forward. It is not enough to say that the President and Vice President lied to the American people in taking us to war. It is not enough to simply say that Judge Alito is an ultra conservative justice who will legislate from the bench. It is not enough to chant about the climate of corruption in the Senate and Congressional Leadership. Along with these statements must come a plan to extract our troops from Iraq while leaving a stable Iraqi government in place, block (and filibuster if necessary) the confirmation of Judge Alito while offering a real alternative, and stay focused on the facts that demonstrate the corrupt activities of the Republican leadership. Now is the time and I hope that the Democratic leadership is up to the task because all of our hopes of taking our nation back from the extremist and zealots of the Republican Party ride on their shoulders.

Those are The Sergeant Majors thoughts on that.
